I have always been interested in human emotions, our connection to nature and the mysticism that I grew up with here in the North. I was born at the end of a fjord, between high mountains. I grew up here, went out into the world and returned after many years to the same place.
Living here in the North means living between all extremes. The contrasts are great throughout the year. From sun throughout all hours of the day in the summer to darkness throughout all hours of the day in the winter. During the long periods of darkness, melancholy finds a natural space. And it is precisely the human emotions and nature that are present in all my pictures.
When I create, I am entirely dependent on light. However, I aim to express universal emotions stemming from the deep silence within us, far down on the grayscale. We all carry this darkness, but most try to avoid it at all costs. I love the light and the joy, but the light would not be as valuable without the melancholy of darkness. It’s like the euphoria of a new summer after a long, dark, cold winter here in the North.
My entire family tree has deep roots here in the North. My grandparents and great-grandparents lived from what nature provided and had a lifestyle that was governed by nature. I have always felt a close affinity with the landscape I live in and I learned early on the respect for nature, myths and the sensual.
